Main Ingredient: Website Popularity
The favorite topic for most of us, as well as the one factor that is going to mean the most in terms of profits for anyone using a website in their career choice, is website popularity. Getting traffic to visit that pages you want them to.
There are so many ways to go about making your website popular that it can make your head spin. In fact the only limitation of this interesting field is in the creativity of webmasters.
For this reason I’ve broken down this ingredient into six sub-categories, although I’m sure there will be more in the future. These six, however, pretty accurately portray the most important areas of traffic building that every webmaster should be made aware of.
First off, we tackle good old Search Engine Optimization, (“SEO Tactics”) which is the largest body of knowledge here on the site, (Does it show that I used to run my own SEO company?) although no longer the most effective means of generating traffic. We’ve all got to learn the basics, however, so it’s highly recommended.
Secondly, “Keyword List Building,” which some might argue belongs inside the SEO section, is more important than the rest of SEO put together, so I felt it needed it’s own category. Heck, even people who do nothing but place AdWords ads need to know this stuff.
Next is “Link Building,” which deals with how to get others to link to your website. (And this is, of course, the means by which the Search Engines recognize your site’s importance.) Although there will always be new ways of convincing others to link to you, this sub-cat will remain a normal size forever because as its’ tactics grow in size, they will break off and be new subcategories here like the final three on this page. (Each of the following are also just ways to get links to your site.)
Fourth in line is “Article Marketing.” This has become once of the hottest trends online of generating traffic and a name for yourself, and I have had some great results with it myself for many different websites. It’s actually surprisingly easy to get started with this and see the traffic flow from these efforts.
“Blogs” deserve their own section here because of their popularity in the search engines. For some reason Google and its cohorts seem to love blog postings, so there’s no reason you should take advantage of this and post some content on a free blog and link it to your site.
Finally, after careful deliberation, I felt it would only be prudent to award “Social Bookmarking” (tagging and the like) its’ own sub-category because of the rapid popularity growth that these sites are seeing. Some webmasters have already made great use of tags to bring their websites popularity, but in the near future it will very likely be the easiest way as well, so we’re on it from the start.
Note: Looking for Viral traffic marketing methods? After carefully defining it I decided to stick it under the Product Marketing Ingredient, as it is more closely related to products than it is to link building, keywords, or SEO.
