Skills and tools needed:
Writing or programming required, just like with a corporate job. However, no one will be looking at your education or resume, just some kind of score, feedback, or referral, as posted on a freelance jobs website.
Anyone at all with any computer skills can easily get started at this assembly line choice, even if they live in a tribal village of some 3rd world country. As long as there’s an internet connection, you’ve got the same chances to land some work as anyone else.
The tools needed are entirely up to your field of expertise. To make a living off this Assembly Line choice, you’ll only need to do the writing or programming on your computer; you won’t even need a host server account. Finding clients is just a matter of logging into a website where they are waiting for you, and paying for your services can be done through that same website.
Description of a writer or programmer:
A copy writer or software programmer is simply someone who sells their work, including website copy, sales copy, forum postings, articles, eBooks, graphics, software programs, scripts, or anything else that can be copyrighted. These are usually written to specifications after the job is commissioned by the buyer. These days the best places to find writers and programmers on websites that act as a job bank and help to mediate between people who need this kind of work done, and people who can do the work.
Since all work is requested, paid for, and delivered over the internet with mediation and even escrow of funds taken care of by the job bank websites, it is very simple to get worldwide exposure for your talents and feel secure that you will get paid on time.
Lifestyle of a writer or programmer:
Do you remember seeing the TV commercial for Dice.com around 2001? They heavily advertised a geek sitting in a lounge chair in his swimming trunks beside a pool at some exotic location… With his laptop, steadily coding away.
There can be a lot of truth in advertising. I personally have written both Copy and software scripts to sell online and in both instances, I felt just like that Geek by the pool… I could do it anywhere I wanted to, but to make enough money to afford to be by the pool, I couldn’t take a vacation from my work. That could just be me though; I don’t claim to be talented in the least.
To get started with one of these job bank websites, you simply have to sign up, make a profile and search the open jobs that you feel you can do a good job on. Unfortunately many others will be bidding for the job too, so to get your rating built up the first few times you’ll need to underbid everyone else… Such is the nature of these job bank sites. Later you will only have to bid a competitive amount, but you have no possible way to get picked in the beginning except for being the lowest bid there... Some have to give away first-time services for free to make a name for themselves!
Since the variety of jobs to choose there are vast, you’ll really just have to go and see if any jobs appeal to you before you absolutely choose this Assembly line selection. If you feel that you need the security of this career path or are talented enough at writing or coding to do better than I did, (again, it won’t take much!) then I encourage you to take this time right now, and go check out two or three of these websites, searching through their open projects to see if there is enough demand for your skillset.
The busiest job boards these days are Rentacoder.com, ework.com, and elance.com, but there are 32 different job bank websites as of the time of this writing. If you choose this assembly line, I’ll give you a full listing, and of course some handy tools and tips to speed you to your success. |
